Money. Piles of money. Billions. Some people have it.
Most people don't. The number of billionaires in the world continues
to increase, and, according to the
Forbes.
Special Report on the World's Billionaires, there are now 793
billionaires on the planet.
Here in Nevada there were five individuals who
made the billionaire list. What do they have in common? No, not all
of them became wealthy through casinos. All five Nevada billionaires
are men. They've all been married, although one is currently
divorced. They all have children. Four of the five are over 60 years
old. Four of the 5 live call the Las Vegas area home. So who are
they?
Sheldon Adelson has
more money than any other resident of Nevada. He lives in Las Vegas
with his wife and children. With a current net worth of over $16
billion, he has been creating, buying and selling companies for
about 50 years. One of Mr. Adelson's best known creations is COMDEX,
the computer trade show. Builder of the Venetian Resort and the
Palazzo Casion, this college drop-out ranks as number 14 on the
Forbes billionaire list.
The youngest of the Nevada billionaires on the
Forbes list this year is Pierre Omidyar who makes his home in
Henderson with his wife and kids. At age 38, he is the 20th youngest
of all the billionaires in the world, and ranks at #43 in terms of
net worth with just over $10 billion. The source of his success is a
concept and a company he created called Ebay.
Stephen Wynn is on
the Forbes billionaire list at #365 with a net worth of just over $2
billion. He and his family live in Las Vegas. If you haven't heard
of the Wynn Las Vegas resort, I'm not sure where you've been! Before
this recent project, Mr. Wynn built the Mirage, Treasure Island and
Bellagio.
Gaming has been William Boyd's friend, and
since founding Boyd Gaming with his father in 1974, he has grown his
empire to include casinos in Nevada, Mississippi, Louisiana,
Illinois, Indiana, New Jersey. At #562 on the billionaires list,
William Boyd has a net worth of about $1.4 billion. Divorced with
children, he lives in Las Vegas. The law school at UNLV has his name
on it.
The last billionaire from Nevada on the Forbes
list comes in at #698 with just over $1 billion in net worth.
David Duffield is married with 9 children and lives in Incline
Village. His fortune was made by creating a company called
PeopleSoft, which, after a long and nasty battle, was acquired by
Oracle.
